PLANNING YOUR VISIT


Reservation Duration

  • Museum of Utah field trip reservations, both guided and self-guided, are two hours in length. Guided field trips should plan to utilize the entire two-hour reservation period.
  • Partner field trip reservations with the Utah State Capitol can be reserved for either a three-hour or four-hour block.

Chaperones

Required Minimum Chaperone Ratios:

  • K-6th Grade: One chaperone per four students
  • 7th-9th Grade: One chaperone per six students
  • 10th-12th Grade: One chaperone per ten students

EXPECTATIONS

  • Groups arriving without the required number of chaperones may have their field trip experience altered or adjusted to align with the Museum of Utah’s ratio requirements. Please review our chaperone ratio requirements to ensure your group meets these expectations.
  • Chaperones are expected to supervise and engage with students at all times during the field trip.
  • Field trips are exclusively for participating students; younger children or siblings are not permitted.
  • Chaperones will receive guide materials to support student exploration, discovery, and dialogue. These resources include:
    • Museum map
    • Exhibit highlights
    • Guiding prompts
    • Museum rules

Min/Max Capacity

  • Museum of Utah Field Trip
    • Minimum: 15 students
    • Maximum: 90 students
  • Partner Field Trip
    • Minimum: 30 students
    • Maximum: 180 students

Lunch/Storage

  • Museum of Utah Field Trip
    • The Museum of Utah does not have a designated lunch space. 
      • Non-refrigerated lunch storage is available. Please note in your reservation if you would like us to store your lunches. 
      • Please ensure lunches are organized and prepared for easy transport.
  • Partner Field Trip 
    • The Utah State Capitol provides lunch storage for partner field trips. If you wish to use these facilities, please make arrangements with the Capitol Preservation Board when booking your field trip.
      • School groups should designate a teacher to transport student lunches to the Utah State Capitol for storage upon arrival.
  • A designated indoor lunch space is available on the Capitol's 1st floor. This is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Consider these alternative public outdoor lunch spots on the Capitol Complex:
    • Capitol Lawns:
      • West lawn - green space with significant tree shade
      • South lawn - green space with partial tree shade
    • Capitol Plazas:
      • North plaza - cement plaza north of the Museum of Utah, with a drinking fountain
      • Central plaza - cement plaza between the south side of the Museum of Utah and the north side of the Capitol building, with a drinking fountain 
  • Nearby parks:
    • Memory Grove Park
      • 375 N. Canyon Road, Salt Lake City
      • Amenities: restrooms, drinking fountain, picnic tables
    • City Creek Park
      • 350 State St, Salt Lake City
      • Amenities: drinking fountain, plaza, historic site

Museum Store

  • Museum Store access is prohibited for students on field trips.

One month in advance of your scheduled field trip, our museum education team will contact you with supplemental materials and resources for educators designed to support your visit. These materials will include museum layout maps, essential museum rules and expectations, and supportive materials for teachers and chaperones.
