National History Day In Utah Recognizes Teachers Of The Year

National History Day in Utah is thrilled to announce two outstanding educators who have been named our 2024 Mike Johnson Teachers of the Year.

James Romrell, from Lakeridge Junior High, is our Junior division teacher of the year. As a dedicated NHD teacher for almost a decade, he is the type of teacher students flourish under and remember years later.  In his classroom, NHD is a tool for teaching study skills, time management, and project completion.  Along the way he instills confidence in his students, a love of history, and academic research, all while encouraging them to follow their passions.

Abbie Butler, from Mountain Heights Online Academy, is our Senior division teacher of the year. She is recognized for her development of a comprehensive curriculum that brings NHD into her classroom and guides them each step of the way.  Her students have been among the top achievers at NHD, but what they remember is her support and an enthusiasm for history that is infectious.

As Utah’s award winners, Ms. Butler and Mr. Romrell will compete for the National History Day Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year with nominees from more than 50 state and international NHD affiliates. Winners will be announced at the NHD national contest in June.
