Background

Background Note

Stereographs consist of two pictures of the same subject mounted side by side to correspond to the viewer's "binocular" vision. The viewer looks through a stereoscope and the image gives the illusion of being three-dimensional. The viewer can "pretend" to be viewing the same image as the photographer actually photographed. Early stereographs were made as early as 1853, but it was not until 1859 that the "parlor stereoscope" became popular in the American home. Photographers were sent all over the world to shoot images for this demand. The stereograph has the longest history of popularity of any form of photograph, creating a tremendous business opportunity for photographers in all areas. Many of these early stereographs have survived. This collection contains some of them. Stores were opened to rent stereographs and stereoscopes, much like the modern day video rental stores. Stereographs provided a virtually inexhaustible reservoir of information concerning the life and times of the past.

Scope and Content

The collection contains scenic view of Colorado, Idaho, Utah and the west. Other photographs contain materials that enhance the stereograph concept to produce a memorable 3-D image. The stereographs are of Utah and intermountain scenes taken in the 1890s and early 20th century. The early photographs were taken by Huish and Hinshaw, scenic photographers. Other photographs were taken in the 1930s by T. E. Hinshaw and Charles L. Joy. Some of these photographs are European scenes and eastern United States.
