Abstract: The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has existed in the State of Utah since 1865. Membership increased yearly until the mid 1930s at which time a slow but steady decrease in members began. It is a fraternal organization that met weekly to create a stronger brotherhood among members as well as to do good for and in the community. Many lodges existed throughout the state, though the majority of this collection is centered on the lodge at Milford, Utah. This collection is divided into 4 sections: correspondence between lodges, Salt Lake City correspondence and financial documents, Milford correspondence and financial documents, and miscellaneous items (oversize).

Background

Background Note

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows started in Utah in 1865 with the creation of Lodge No. 1 in Salt Lake City. From its beginnings until the First World War, the Odd Fellows in Utah flourished in many cities throughout the State. Since the mid 1930s the Odd Fellows has declined in membership. Currently there are very few members and/or lodges remaining in Utah.
The International Order of Odd Fellows is a voluntarily joined fraternal Christian organization. The membership promotes what it calls the Three Links: Friendship, Love, and Truth. To be a member dues are paid monthly and weekly meetings attended. The money collected takes care of the members when sickness and/or death occurs.
