Quantity: | 2.5 lin. ft. (5 boxes) |
Abstract: | Steen received a degree in geology form Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy at El Paso and eventually discovered uranium in the Moab area which led to the opening of the Mi Vida mine. This discovery triggered Moab's uranium boom and skyrocketed the area into national prominence. Steen proceeded to buy up and develop a large group of mines in the area. Seeing the need for a local reduction mill to serve the mines, in 1954 Steen approached the Atomic Energy Commission about the possiblity of building a mill in Moab. He then formed the Uranium Reduction Co. which was the first large, independent uranium mill built in the United States. The mill was dedicated in 1957. Steen ran the mill for five years and then sold it to the Atas Corp. in 1962. Steen eventually fell upon hard times over disputes with the IRS and lost everything. This collection contains miscellanous Steen correspondence, legal documents and materials dealing with the Uranium Reduction Company, Utex Exploration Co, and Atlas Minerals. |
