Lecture: The Life of Erastus Snow

In his President’s Colleagues lecture, “The Life of Erastus Snow,” Steven Snow will explain how Erastus Snow led the Southern Utah Mission, consisting of Southern Utah, Southern and Eastern Nevada, Arizona and Northern Mexico, from 1861 until his death in 1888. The presentation will include an introduction of Erastus Snow’s early life, his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his Church responsibilities and his family life, with an emphasis on his time in St. George.

A St. George native, Steven Snow attended Dixie College and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Utah State University and a law degree from Brigham Young University before going on to become a senior partner in the St. George law firm Snow Nuffer. He has supported education by serving as a member and president of his local school board, chairman of the Utah State Board of Regents and chairman of the Western States Commission of Higher Education. He also has been involved in conservation work, having served as the chairman and a member of the Grand Canyon Trust.

Additionally, Steven Snow was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the LDS Church in March 2001, and served as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy from 2007 to 2012. He also has served as church historian, recorder, executive director of the Church History Department, executive director of the Priesthood Department and president of the Africa Southeast Area of the Church.

The President’s Colleagues of DSU, established more than 20 years ago by Douglas Alder, professor emeritus and former president of Dixie State, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the Washington County area. Alder, who also started DSU’s Honors Program, organized the group as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The next President’s Colleagues meeting will feature Dixie State University President Richard B. Williams as he presents his State of the University address. The meeting is set to take place at noon on Monday, April 6 in Dixie State’s Taylor Health Science Center.
