FOUR CORNERS HERITAGE COUNCIL
HERITAGE SITE STEWARDS CONFERENCE
ARIZONA SITE STEWARD PROGRAM
Ray & Juanita Huber, Site Stewards
October 10, 2001
Description
This presentation was about the formation of the Arizona Site Steward Program, including a slide program that covered the early start-up process of the site steward program to the present. It covered recruitment of site stewards, training, funding, award banquets, potlucks, field training, newsletter and the statewide conference. It covered the presenters particular area of Arizona, which is the Arizona Strip District, how their regional coordinators organized a Board of Directors, and how the board operates.
How to Use This Tool
Representatives from other states that are setting up a Site Steward program can benefit by the past experiences of the Arizona program including training both field and classroom, social events, etc. In particular working closely with the land manager and in some cases the ranchers with grazing rights. Larger site steward groups can benefit by setting up a board of directors (each board member has his/her own area of responsibility) which may include training mentoring of other site stewards, potlucks, record keeping, interviewing prospective new site stewards, etc. The board can be as large or small as needed to help relieve the work load of the regional coordinator.
Limitations
Finding the right person to be a site steward or the regional coordinator, people who are dedicated to the cause of cultural preservation and people who have the free time. A regional coordinator must be enthusiastic and a leader. At NO TIME should a site steward create the impression that he/she has any official authority. We are only here to observe and report.
