A workshop, training booklet and video: The Land of Silent Voices. The purpose of this tool is education and appreciation of the importance and fragile nature of archaeological resources in the American Southwest. The Partners in Preservation project was sponsored by the Four Corners Heritage Council and the Grand Canyon Trust. The centerpiece is a three hour training session presented by local agency archaeologists to owners and employees of tour companies who use archaeological sites as part of their trips.

The free workshop includes:

  • Hands-on artifact display
  • Video
  • A short history of archaeology in the Southwest
  • Methods and techniques of archaeology
  • An overview of prehistoric cultures
  • Issues facing managers of archaeological resources
  • What participants in the class can do to help.

How to Use This Tool
By using and adapting these materials, workshops can be developed for any area. The video can be used as a stand-alone teaching tool. The user ethics are applicable for most Southwestern sites and can be used for on-site signs, brochures and articles.
