Description
The USDA Forest Service contracted with Geiger and Associates, a public relations firm specializing in heritage tourism, to develop a media press kit. The package describes the agency's Heritage (archaeology and history) program, with particular emphasis on programs and properties that are available to the public. The goal is to produce articles in magazines and newspapers that will raise the level of awareness of the importance of heritage resources and build support for the program internally and externally.
The generic (national) press kit includes the following sections:
- General Fact Sheet
- A Summary of the Agency's Programs
- History of the Heritage Program
- The Passport in Time Volunteer Program
- Site Stewards
- Volunteers
- Heritage Expeditions
- The Heritage Celebration
- Zinj Magazine
- Two Major Heritage Sites in Each of the 9 Regions (A Short Description of and Contacts for Each Site)
- Editorial Leads List (Potential Story Ideas)
- Windows on the Past: The Agency's Public Outreach Program (A Summary of the Range of Heritage Sites and Programs Available)
- Information Response Form Checklist (For Requesting Additional Information)
How to Use This Tool
Copies of the generic kit are customized by regional offices by adding maps, brochures and local information. These kits are distributed to national, regional and local news media. Publications and freelance writers use this information to contact U.S. Forest Service archaeologists for assistance in writing articles. They can also obtain more detailed information from the Washington office through the Information Response Form.
Limitations
Only the highlights of the Heritage program are presented. The press kit is brand new and is being distributed May 1997.
