Description
The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government's official list of sites that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, and engineering. Sites do not have to be of national significance to be listed on the Register. The majority of listed properties have state and local significance. The purpose of the program is to recognize and encourage the preservation of historic properties. Benefits of designation include tax credits for rehabilitation of historic buildings and possible grants when funds are available.
How to Use This Tool
Research can be done by anyone and the Preservation Office can help the owner complete the necessary documentation to nominate the property. Once it is nominated, it is presented to the State Board of History and then the National Park Service.
