				<head> Historical Note </head>
				<p> The <title render="italic">U.S.S. Utah </title>(AG-16) (ex BB-31) was launched
23 December 1909, and was placed in commission at Philadelphia Navy Yard 31
August 1911. It was assigned to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet March 1912, and
protected American interests off Veracruz (Mexico) from February to June 1914.
During World War I the U.S.S. Utah served as a training ship for gunnery crews
and new engineering recruits in the Chesapeake Bay. The ship sailed for Europe
August 1918, protecting convoys in Bantry Bay (Ireland) until the Armistice. It
					arrived in Boston 25 December 1918. </p>
				<p>In 1932 the <title render="italic">U.S.S. Utah </title> was commissioned as a
mobile target ship. It joined the Pacific Fleet in 1935, arriving in Pearl
Harbor and ports along the West coast through the early 1940s. </p>
<p>The ship had recently returned to Hawaii from a six-week anti-aircraft training
cruise when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941. The U.S.S. Utah
took two torpedo hits in the first five minutes of the attack. Thirty officers
and 431 men survived, while six officers and 52 men either drowned when trapped
onboard, or were killed by the strafing attacks while they swam for shore. The
ship was declared "out of commission, not in service," in 1944. The <title
render="italic">U.S.S. Utah </title> was deemed unsalvageable. The ship
earned one battle star for participation in the Pearl Harbor attack. The
partially submerged hulk remains at Pearl Harbor.</p>
