Background Note

The annual Preservation Photograph Contest focused on historic
theaters in 2005. Nearly every community in Utah had a theater. These buildings
served as an entertainment center for film, live performances and community
get-togethers.

Theaters have a rich history in Utah. Theater was important to the
early pioneers who built Social Hall located in Salt Lake City and the Salt
Lake Theatre followed in 1862. Early 20th century saw the construction of
elaborate movie and performing arts theaters in the Art Deco, Gothic, Egyptian
and Chinese motifs.

Theaters have been in a decline over the last several years. Single
screen theaters have a hard time against multi-screen theaters. Drive-in
theaters have vanished as well. A renewed interest in historic preservation has
resulted in many of these early theaters being restored. This year's contest
shows some of these remarkable buildings. Over 100 entries documented historic
theaters in Utah.
