		  <p>Murray City, originally known as South Cottonwood, was named for
			 territorial governor Eli Murray. Located eight miles south of Salt Lake City it
			 was settled in 1849, but was not incorporated until 1902. Smelters dominated
			 the local economy until the close of the ASARCO lead smelter in 1950.
			 Commercial businesses thrived along with the smelter industry. Murray was hard
			 hit by the 1930s depression. The city began to look to various Federal projects
			 to compensate for the economic loss of smelter closures. Murray's central
			 location in the Salt Lake Valley makes Murray an "ideal" bedroom community and
			 small business and service industries. Murray has continued to grow and thrive.

		<p>Photographs of Murray (Utah) depicting people, life, recreation, fire
		  department, and businesses from ca. 1900 to the early 1990s. The photographs
		  are all copies of original prints found in the Murray City Historical
		  Collection archives or borrowed from private individuals in the Murray area.
		  The Murray Historical Society maintains a copy of the photographs also. The
		  Utah State Historical Society holds the negatives to both collections. There is
		  a chronological listing of Murray mayors from 1902 to 1994.</p>
