Historical Note

Rodney Degrass Swasey was born 4 December 1832 to Joseph A. Swasey
and Hannah Mercy Currier in Woodstock, New Hampshire. Baptized a member of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 20 July 1847, Swasey moved to Utah
in the late 1840s. He married Lucy Loretta Scovill in Salt Lake City 28
December 1850, and married a second wife, Martha York Carter, on 28 December
 1857.

Swasey moved to El Dorado, California sometime in the 1850s, where
his descendants say he "struck it rich." He moved his family back to Utah and
helped settle Mona in 1857. Swasey ranched a large herd of cattle in western
Millard and Juab counties. He built a large barn west of his home in Mona,
raising purebred horses that he sold to the army. In 1866, Swasey was ordained
a member of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Seventy.

The collection includes general information about the Swasey family
in the San Rafael Swell, its folklore and its genealogy in England.
