Historical Note

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal program, operated
from 1933 until 1942. The CCC provided jobs and training to young men
(primarily between the ages of 18 and 25) and made improvements on public land.
There were 116 CCC camps established in Utah. A camp usually consisted of about
200 men. CCC projects ranged from constructing campgrounds to erosion control
structures. The CCC also fought forest fires, planted trees, and numerous other
activities.

Scope and Content

The collection includes correspondence, research notes, newsletters,
articles, handbooks, and files from Roger Roper's research of the Civilian
Conservation Corps. Beginning in the early 1990s, Roper worked as part of the
State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to try to document all of the known
CCC structures in Utah. Roper partnered with various land management agencies
such as the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and the National
Park Service, and together SHPO and the Forest Service coordinated a CCC
project in Utah County, materials of which are included in the collection. As
Roper collected information concerning the historic structures built by the
CCC, he also collected other historic sources and materials, which are included
in the collection. The CCC in Utah is the focal point of the collection,
although some materials came from other states' CCC programs.
