Background Note

The Mountain Star Association #114 was established in November 1899.
The minutes of these meetings are in Finnish. The first meeting began with a
song and prayer. The first officials of the Association were: Fred Saari,
President; Alfred Pakkala, Vice-President; Antte Kleemala, Secretary. Housing
and sick committees, among others, were organized. Other Star Associations were
organized at Clear Creek and Diamondville.

The Mountain Star Association was apparently a mutual aid
organization for Finns living in the Scofield area of Carbon County. The
collection also contains some personal records of Jacob Jarvie, including
several letters from his mother living in Finland.
