Historical Note

This collection is made up of transcriptions of Ohio, Illinois, Iowa
and Missouri newspaper articles about Mormons. Cecil A. and Helen Fulton Snider
collected the information for Cecil's 1933 master's thesis from the State
University of Iowa entitled: "A Syllabus on Mormonism in Illinois from the
Angle of the Press: Newspaper Source Materials, 1838-1848." The Fultons sold
copies of the transcribed articles to various libraries. In the 1930s or 1940s,
Brigham Young University paid $500 for their set of carbon copies, and other
copies are located at the New York Public Library, Harvard Library, and a few
other libraries. The collection was titled "The Mormons in Ohio, Illinois,
Missouri, etc." The original sets had an index compiled by the Sniders, but
they are missing from this collection. The Writer's Project obtained permission
to copy BYU's set in Provo, but never finished before the Writer's Project was
cancelled at the end of World War II. The Writer's Project gave a copy of its
incomplete transcription to the LDS Church Historian's Office, but to no other
institutions besides the Historical Society.

The news items are arranged chronologically for each newspaper, and
the newspapers are arranged alphabetically. There are eight volumes, each
covering a distinct time period.
