The Utah Statewide Archaeological Society (USAS) is an organization conceived for the individual who is curious about archaeology and the state's historic and prehistoric cultures. If you are among those with such an interest, we invite you to become a member.

USAS is a state-wide organization with chapters in Price, Richfield, Provo, St. George, Cedar City, Moab, Ogden, Vernal, Blanding and Salt Lake. Chapters meet monthly, with weekend activities scheduled throughout the year. A professional archaeologist acts as advisor for each chapter, and we are an affiliate of the Utah Division of State History.

Guest lecturers discuss their specific archaeological projects and recent advances in Utah history and prehistory at the chapter meetings. Newsletters and publications are regularly provided as a benefit of membership. Opportunities to participate in archaeological projects are made available to members with an interest in gaining "hands on" experience.

Workshops on specific topics, such as Rock Art recording are offered on a regular basis.

THE OBJECTIVES OF USAS ARE:

  • To further interest in the archaeology of Utah and to assist in public education on the importance of our cultural heritage.
  • To promote interest in the preservation of Utah's archaeological sites and associated artifacts.
  • To assist in professional archaeological research and the quest of understanding Utah prehistory.

Affiliation with USAS provides the following opportunities in addition to those mentioned:

  • Participation in the Utah Avocational Archaeology Education Program.  This program provides education and training in Utah Archaeology to avocational archaeologists. The program includes three levels of classroom and field course work under the guidance of professional archaeologists. Workshops on specific topics are also offered.
  • Opportunities to assist professional archaeologists in the preservation and development of Utah's cultural resources with the parameters of existing laws.
  • Participation in Utah's Prehistory Week activities.
