Utah Archaeology Week Events

Celebrate Utah's rich and diverse prehistory at events held all over the state--events such as tours to important archaeological sites, free public lectures, museum tours, and many hands-on events.

CARBON COUNTY

May 4th

Event:
Family Activity Day at the Prehistoric Museum
Activities:
- Jewelry/pump drill, rock art boards, face painting, pipe cleaner split twig figurines, treasure hunt, corn grinding, coloring station, Blue Man, build your own dinosaur sculpture
- Information tables for the Castle Valley Archaeological Society (CVAS), Utah Friends of Paleontology (UFOP), and a sign up sheet for the Nine Mile field trip
- Raffle at 11am, Noon, 1pm
- Drum Circle Noon-1pm
- Unveiling of the Museum's new "What is Archaeology?" exhibit at 10am by Dr. Riley

IRON COUNTY

Workshop dates: April 27 and May 4; Field work dates: April 28-May 3 and May 5-6
Event:
Rock art recordation project-- The Nevada Rock Art Foundation will be doing fieldwork at a rock art site. Project volunteers will assist with data collection, field drawings, rock art identification, and mapping. Workshops provided for those new to rock art recordation.
Location: Cedar City, UT area

Archaeology Week Kick-off; activities include:
atlatl throw, mock excavation, face paint, corn grinding, rope making, rock art making, Native American games, and much more.  Various demonstrators and booths to visit.  Also, earn archaeology scout badge.

Historic Irontown Ruins Tour
Location:Meet at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City, and caravan to the site, an approximate 30 minute drive from the Museum.

Rock Art Excursions
guided by professional archaeologists, tours will range from drive-up to 1-mile hikes for viewing; guests will choose to attend a 2 hour or 4 hour excursion and should come prepared with food, water, etc.

SALT LAKE COUNTY

Archaeology Week Open House. Learn about archaeology with events for kids and adults; Archaeology displays, workshops, crafts, demonstrations; atlatl and darts; archaeology displays; Navajo tacos for sale.

SAN JUAN COUNTY

Upper Sand Island Rock Art: The Human Continuum.  It is about the recent rock art research done at Sand Island, how it was done and what was found.
Location: Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum – 660 West 400 North, Blanding

Danger Cave Tour
Join archaeologist Ronald Rood for a tour of Danger Cave in Tooele County.  Danger Cave is one of the most famous archaeological sites in North America and this is a rare opportunity to visit the site with archaeologists and with staff from Utah State Parks. You must provide your own transportation to the site and a reservation is required.  This tour is sponsored by Cardno ENTRIX.
