What We Do

State History is a state agency, a division of the Utah Department of Heritage and Arts.

State History provides services, technical assistance, and streamlined information access--through online databases and published and unpublished sources--to a variety of businesses, industries, and individuals. These include cultural resource management companies, heritage trade industries, building owners and developers, media, professional researchers and genealogists, heritage tourism businesses, and education. In addition, State History provides services to federal and state agencies seeking 106/404 consultation, to cities and counties seeking to develop their heritage resources. The general public also use and benefit from our information, services, and resources. State History provides all services and information as a non-regulatory, business-friendly agency.

Strategic Plans

The history of State History

State History began as the Utah State Historical Society, a private organization founded in 1897. Twenty years later, the Historical Society became a state agency. It became the Utah Division of State History in 1967 and over time became home to the Utah State Historic Preservation Office and acquired additional mandates. Read a more complete history.
